Coffee Culture in Colombia

With so much of the country's culture tied to the industry, it may come as a surprise that the majority of Colombians haven't been drinking the coffee they produce.

Export quality standards have ensured that the best beans are sent abroad, leaving a lesser quality bean that has been adapted into a local brew known as "tinto". It's thicker, more concentrated and sold in small cups. It's a far cry from the quality you'd expect, but sold at a price more friendly to the low working wages that most Colombians have faced.

However, a handful of local coffee farmers and entrepreneurs are looking to change the way Colombians view and consume coffee. By educating local producers in modern brewing techniques and offering intimate tours into real-working fincas, Colombians are starting to learn about the historic process and have a chance to taste a cup of their own fame.
